Why Archery is the Best Sport for Kids

Carolyn and I grew up together, and now we shoot together often. I have seen her grandkids grow into amazing archers over the years. Which is why I asked her to write a post about why archery is the best sport for kids.

Unspoken Archery Rules that Makes it a Great Sport

  1. Support those who support you.
  2. Don’t chase trophies.
  3. Stay humble.
  4. Help others.
  5. Set an example, be the kind of person you would want your kid to be around.

This is why I keep my boys in archery! I couldn’t find a better bunch of people. Traditional archery is such a great environment for children. Every club we visit, the people are awesome! The experiences they are getting are phenomenal. Self improvement, focus, patience, hitting the mark and the benefits of trying hard. Those are life lessons if there ever was one.

Old Fashion Skills that Build Traditional Boys

My boys are learning skills. Not just archery. Knife skills, fire building, sling shots, primitive skills and all kinds of things in nature. Having them in nature is a true blessing. They are not sitting in front of a TV, tablet or phone all the time. They are being boys, the way boys should be. Traditional Boys! They are also learning what it takes to enjoy a sport like archery. To play you pay. The time and work involved in putting a shoot together. They help with setting up and taking down the ranges. As well as the logistics of running a shoot. Another life lesson. They enjoy helping out, which makes me proud.

Raising The Next Generation of Archers

I am a single grandma raising 2 grandsons and have 4 more and a granddaughter. The 3 oldest boys, 11, 10 and 9 years old participate with me in traditional archery. I want them to grow up and be good men and women. To do that, they need good examples and we have met some of the best. I surround them with archers. Men and Women. We have made wonderful friends that love and spoil them rotten, in a good way. Showing my boys the qualities of good men and good women. Where ever we go, we are welcomed and treated with respect and kindness. I couldn’t ask for anything more. If my boys grow up and follow their examples it will make this Mawmaw proud as can be! When the time comes for them to choose a wife, I hope she is an archer.

How Our Archery Journey Began

Pat with Ascham Oaks Archery got me started in Traditional Archery. We went to school together and ended up neighbors in our adult lives. He was telling me about what he was doing and I told him “I want to try that”. He let me try and that was it. He got me equipped, gave me some lessons and has been there with me the whole way. I am finally shooting well enough to give him a run for his money.

He is one of those awesome people, setting the example for my boys.

Thanks Pat for leading me to traditional archery!
