Archery for All Ages: A Sport the Whole Family Can Share

One of the biggest challenges in family life—especially when you’re homeschooling—is finding an activity that everyone enjoys. Not just something the kids can do. Not just something the adults tolerate. But something that brings all of us together.

For our family, that thing is archery.

What started as a hobby for Emily has turned into a full-on family affair, spanning three generations—Emily, me, my husband Kevin, and my dad, Pat Ditto. And the best part? Archery makes room for all of us, no matter our age or ability.

Why Archery Works for Every Age

We shoot together regularly, and here’s the secret that makes it all possible: most archery shoots have designated stakes for different age groups. That means we can all shoot at the same 3D target, but from distances that match our skill level or age category.

For example:

  • Emily, as a youth shooter, might shoot from 12 yards.
  • I shoot from the women’s stake—usually around 15 yards.
  • Kevin and Pat, as adult men, shoot from around 20 yards.

It’s genius. We’re all participating in the same event, hitting the same targets, but in a way that feels fair and fun for each of us. It’s not just accommodating—it’s inclusive. From ages 6 to 60, we’re all out there, side by side, laughing, learning, and challenging ourselves. Not many sports can say that.

Why Archery Makes the Perfect Family Sport

One of our favorite family archery memories happened recently at a local shoot. After walking the course, tallying scores, and swapping stories of close calls and lucky shots, we realized something amazing: Emily, my dad (Pat), and I had tied—all three of us. Three generations. One score. Total tie.

What other sport lets a child, her mom, and her grandpa all compete together on equal footing—and end up in a three-way draw? It was one of those moments I’ll never forget, not because of the score itself, but because of the shared pride and joy on all of our faces. It wasn’t about winning. It was about doing it together.

It’s Customizable for All Skill Levels

Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned shooter, archery scales with you. The adjustable distances, draw weights, and styles (traditional, compound, recurve) make it accessible for nearly every age and physical ability.

It Encourages Togetherness, Not Just Competition

While scores can be kept, most archery events and shoots are about enjoyment and self-improvement. We walk the course together, cheer each other on, and celebrate good shots. It’s about connection, not comparison.

It’s Quiet, Focused, and Mindful

Unlike many high-energy sports, archery is peaceful. It creates space for conversation, reflection, and presence. We’ve had some of our best family chats while walking from target to target.

It’s Multi-Generational by Nature

Archery has no expiration date. My dad (Pat) is in his 60s and still shoots regularly—often outscoring the rest of us! Emily started around age 6 and took to it naturally. And I’ve found it to be the perfect blend of challenge and calm. There are few things more special than sharing the same passion across generations.

Getting Started with Archery as a Family Sport

In a world where it’s easy to drift apart across age groups and interests, archery has given our family something truly special: shared time, shared goals, and shared joy. We’re not just spectators at Emily’s events—we’re teammates on the range. And that means the world.

If you’re looking for a hobby that welcomes everyone in your family, try archery. It’s more than a sport. It’s a chance to make memories across generations—one arrow at a time. If you’re inspired to start archery as a family, we highly recommend reading these posts:
